I really want to live a life of purity and modesty, and I know that God will bring the right guy my way at the right time. In the meantime, I’ve decided not to date, but I’m afraid that my friends will make fun of me for it. I don’t know how to explain it to my friends if they ask. Part of me doesn’t really care about what they have to say, but then I know that it will hurt me when the time comes. Any advice?

You're right: some people won't get why you would choose to live your life the way you feel God is leading you to live it. And yeah, their response is probably going to hurt. But just remember that you're the one who will get to enjoy the amazing blessings that come from following hard after God.

It reminds me of a sermon Jesus once gave. You can read the whole thing in Matthew 5, but here are some highlights:

"God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God....God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are My followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way."
Matthew 5:8, 10-12 (NLT)

I'm proud of you for doing what you feel is right. God will give you the right words to explain your convictions to your friends when the time comes. But just know that even if they don't get it—even if they laugh at you or ridicule you—there are far worse things in life (like suffering through a broken heart because of dating "just to date").

Love,

Jessie
